Creating Space for Reflection

Creating Space for Reflection

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the constant need to do more, achieve more, and be more. As an artist, I’ve often found myself caught up in the pressure to constantly create, to produce work that meets certain expectations, and to keep up with the demands of my practice. However, recently I’ve come to realise the importance of carving out space for reflection, both in my creative work and in my everyday life.

I’ve been looking into mindfulness practices, particularly ways to reframe moments of self-doubt (I have awful imposter syndrome at times) and feelings of lack (not doing something, not achieving this, I should be doing....). Rather than focusing on not making enough work, I’m trying to find glimmers in the things I am doing, celebrating small wins and looking for the positives in the process. It’s about shifting my mindset to embrace what is happening, rather than what isn’t.

Some days, things don’t feel amazing, and not everything is achieved, procrastination sets in or I have to alter my original plans for the day, but I’ve learned to accept that or at least not to feel guilty.

I’ve also made an effort to step away from the pressure of creating the perfect social media posts. Instead, I’ve started sharing what’s happening in the moment, whether it’s a work-in-progress, a simple thought, or a quiet moment of reflection. I’m realising that it’s okay to let go of the need for perfection in how I present myself and my art. This shift has brought a new sense of freedom and honesty to my work. It's also nice sharing how I'm getting on and getting feedback throughout rather than just at the end.

Reflecting on my creative journey helps me find balance. It’s not just about pushing forward, ticking off my to do list, it’s about taking moments to breathe, to step outside, and to notice the world around me. Perhaps, it’s the quiet beauty of nature, the rhythm of my breath, or simply allowing my thoughts to settle, these moments of reflection bring a sense of peace and clarity that can’t be found in the hustle.

Recently, I had the opportunity to experience the Sonic Woodland sound installation by Hidden Orchestra. Being surrounded by the melodies of trees and the movement of sound through the forest reminded me of how important it is to slow down and listen. There’s a certain balance in nature, the ebb and flow of energy, the unseen connections between everything. It’s this balance I strive to reflect in my art. Taking time to reflect and embrace the present is as much a part of my creative process as picking up a paintbrush.

In both life and art, balance is key. I’m learning that it’s okay to pause, to reflect, and to honour the process, the creating, because, in doing so, I find that new possibilities begin to unfold.

I recently came across a quote that said:

Don't use your energy to worry. Use your energy to believe, create, trust, grow, glow, manifest and heal.

I've been reading it every morning as a reminder for the day ahead.
