Creativity in Summer

Creativity in Summer

Perhaps creativity in summer is more about play. Summer changes the flow of life, time seems to go on for ages, the days stretch out and there is copious amounts of ice cream being eaten.

I think we tend to put a lot of pressure on creativity, what are we making? is it good enough? what's the point to all of this?

Perhaps summer is the chance to just try, make it badly, make it quickly, try something completely new, do anything that takes the pressure off.

Perhaps these months instead of following a colour, or a feeling, focus on creating with your hands. Flower arranging, making a cake, sculpture.

If you're visiting somewhere new make a journal to capture all the lovely things from your trip. Include receipts and ticket stubs, draw the bottle of drink or the pebble found on the beach. I do this activity with groups where i get blue tac and an ink pad. You put the blue tac over something interesting, a sign, a door plaque, even a texture then you press the blue tac into the ink pad and then onto your page. It creates an amazing quick and interesting way to capture your surroundings.

However, possibly the most important thing to remember for the summer...

It's ok to do nothing. Just lie on the grass, watch the kids playing, sit on a bench, look out of the window. Summer is chaotic and wonderful at the same time and you don't need any extra pressure. That's definitely a reminder to myself too!
