A still surface can change with the slightest touch of wind. You can sit and watch it happen, as tiny movements travel across the water, catching the light and creating patterns that weren’t there a moment before.
In this painting, the ripple begins in the bottom corner and spreads across the surface, moving through layers of soft reds, yellows and blues. The landscape is only hinted at, with colours and shapes appearing and disappearing as the eye moves through the painting.
Perhaps that is what I like about ripples. They feel gentle and almost joyful in their willingness to change. One moves across the surface, another comes from a different direction, and neither needs to stay the same. They meet, adapt and become something new.
